Obituary

SUTTON, Velma Georgette, Born August 17, 1928- June 20, 2023, Aged 94 Years

The family of the late Velma Sutton are sad to announce our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother left us for heaven on June 20, 2023. She passed away at St. Paul’s Personal Care home in The Pas, MB with her beloved husband Wil by her side.

Velma was born in Winnipeg, MB on August 17, 1928 and was raised in The Pas. She completed a secretary course there and worked at National Fruit for several years. On September 2, 1950 she married the love of her life, Wil Sutton. They resided in Boissevain, Melita and Churchill. While in Churchill, Marc arrived in 1957, and Michelle in 1959. They then moved to Pine Falls, Winnipeg and in 1968 they settled in Roblin. Velma worked part time at the medical clinic for over eight years. In 1979 they built their dream home on Goose Lake. Mom loved her life in Roblin and she had many wonderful friends. Velma took pride in the garden and flowerbeds. For many years she was an active member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where she served as president of the lady’s group and helped compile the weekly church bulletin. Velma enjoyed knitting and made over 100 prayer shawls. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing cards.

Velma was also part of a group that made ceramics. Over the years she had completed many beautiful pieces. She also loved birds and for years would watch and feed them. She adored all the family dogs as well. Velma also enjoyed hosting social events at their house on the lake and in the backyard where she made many memories with her wonderful group of friends known as the “jet set.” Mom and Dad travelled extensively across Canada with family and friends. They also made trips to Texas, the Caribbean, Arizona, Hawaii, and Mexico.

Velma will be remembered by her husband Wil, son Marc (Sherri), daughter Michelle (Jim), grandchildren Louise (Ryan), Alana (Jason), Jenna (Stu), Jared (Adrianne), Riley (Lisa), and Tyler, plus 11 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Dale and sister Deanna (Don).
