In Loving Memory of

Velma Ruth Buick (nee Schott)

1924 – 2016

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and best friend, Velma Buick, on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Crocus Court Personal Care Home, in Roblin, Manitoba.

Velma began her life in Warren, Manitoba where she was born on September 4 1924, to Martin and Margaret (nee Hogg) Schott. After completing Normal School in Winnipeg, Velma taught at rural schools in St. Andrews, Langruth, Eriksdale and Roblin.

In Roblin, Velma met Grant Buick and they were married on November 11, 1950 at Westminster United Church in Winnipeg. Velma and Grant lived on their farm in Tummel for the next 49 years, raising their five children.

Due to ill health, Grant and Velma were forced to move into a suite in Roblin in 1999.  In 2006, Velma’s eyesight began to fail, so she decided to move into Maple Manor.  She enjoyed her time in Maple Manor as there was always a bingo or card game to look forward to.  In 2016, ill health forced Velma to join the community at Crocus Court Personal Care Home.

Besides her family and farm life, Velma loved gardening, baking, entertaining family and friends, travelling, reading, crossword puzzles and, of course, playing cards.  Over the years, she rarely missed a whist drive at Tummel School and, in later years, at the Roblin 50 and Over Club.

Velma thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Scotland, Florida, Arizona, Alaska, the east and west coasts of Canada, as well as many trips across the prairies.

Velma was active in both the Tummel and Roblin communities, serving and helping in various capacities.  She was an active member of the Tummel Ladies Club, Tummel United Church, and later, the Roblin United Church.  Velma held a lifetime membership with the Roblin Ladies Auxiliary, and eventually became a member of the Roblin Legion Branch #24.

Velma was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Margaret (nee Hogg) Schott, her beloved husband, Grant Buick, her sister, Hazel McCann, brother-in-law, Doug McCann and sister-in-law, Ruby Schott.

Left to cherish Velma’s memory are her sons, Gary (Joann) Buick, Blair (Angela) Buick, all of Roblin, Rodney (Connie) Buick of Redcliff Alberta, Dale (Karen) Buick of Flin Flon, Manitoba; daughter, Joy (Glenn) Beghin of Winnipeg; eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; her brothers, Ronald Schott of Stonewall, Manitoba and Jack (Jona) Schott of Warren, Manitoba; and extended family.

Visitation was held at the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home on Friday evening, September 16, 2016.

The Funeral service was held on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 2:00 PM in Tummel United Church, Tummel, Manitoba with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating.  The organist, Allison Shearer-Craig, led the congregational hymns; “Amazing Grace”, “O Love, That Will Not Let Me Go” and “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”. Bob and Betty Dayson performed the duet, “Beyond the Sunset”.  Velma’s nephew, Wayne Buick, read a special poem “Feelings” which was written by Velma’s sister, Hazel, in 1990. The Words of Remembrance was given by Wade Schott, as he shared his memories of Velma.

An Honor Guard was formed by members of The Royal Canadian Legion, Roblin Branch #24.  Honorary Casket Bearers were all those who had touched Velma’s life.

Prior to the service, a private family Interment Service and the Legion Poppy Memorial Service were held at Tummel Deer Park Cemetery. Velma was carried to her final resting place in the Buick family plot by the Casket Bearers; Trevor Buick, Travis Buick, Jarrett Beghin, Chris Fontaine, Rodney Buick and Dale Buick.

Following the Funeral service, a reception for family and friends was held in the Roblin 50 and Over Club, hosted by The Royal Canadian Legion, Roblin Branch #24.

Rest in peace Mom – we love you!
