Sophie Ewanyshyn, age 89 years of Brandon, Manitoba passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 14th, 2016 at the Regional Health Centre in Brandon.
Sophie was born on April 25th, 1926, at Grandview, Manitoba to Matt and Mary (nee Huska) Kowal.
Sophie was a long time resident of Grandview. Sophie worked as a Bookkeeper for the Gilbert Plains Creamery and for Patterson Construction prior to her marriage to Matt Ewanyshyn in 1956. For a few years after their marriage, Matt and Sophie lived in Virden, Manitoba thereafter returning to Grandview for their remaining years together until Matt’s death in March of 2009.
In 2012, Sophie moved to Brandon and lived in the Odd Fellows Manor until her failing health necessitated her admittance to the Brandon Regional Health Centre in late September 2015.
Surviving Sophie are her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Barbara Bohune of Brandon, her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Peter Gibson of North Vancouver, B.C, and her grandchildren; Tara Bohune (Chris) of Vancouver, B.C, Brett Bohune of Brandon, Morgan (nee Gibson) and Mike Gustavson of North Vancouver, and Cory Gibson (Nicole) of North Vancouver. Sophie is also survived by her sister, Anne Chyz of Grandview, her sisters-in-law; Jean Kowal (Dauphin) and Betty Rachuk of Brandon, as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Sophie was predeceased by her parents; Matthew and Mary (nee Huska) Kowal, her husband Matt Ewanyshyn, five siblings; John and wife Ann Rachuk, Peter Rachuk, Lena (nee Rachuk) and husband Peter Chyz, Bill and wife Mary Kowal, Mike Kowal, and her brother-in-law Paul Chyz.
Sophie will be forever cherished in our memories as truly an amazing mom and grandmother. Her unfaltering strength, courage and unrelenting love to our family will live on in our hearts forever.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 11th, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Grandview Memorial Gardens where Sophie will be laid to rest. Reverend Karen Kuzyk will officiate the service. Following the service, a reception for family and friends will be held at the Grandview Legion.
