In Loving Memory of
Sarah (Sadie) Pauline Scott
1929 - 2015
On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, Sadie Scott passed away at her home. Sadie was born on February 16, 1929 at Grandview, Manitoba. She was a daughter to Thomas Arthur Shield and Euphemia Lily May Shield (nee Braid).
On October 20, 1948, Sadie was united in marriage to Wilbert “Earl” Scott. Together they raised seven children; Thomas, Albert, Marilyn, Raymond, Stephen, Sharon and Arthur.
Sadie’s chosen profession was teaching. After completing Grade 11, Sadie went to Winnipeg to take a six-week course that provided her with a special permit to teach. At age 16 (being the youngest teacher in Manitoba) she taught at Sugar Loaf School for one year. She then obtained her Grade 12, followed by teaching at Duck Mountain School for one year. Sadie continued to substitute teach at Tamarisk and Gilbert Plains Elementary and High School.
Sadie and Earl farmed south of Gilbert Plains. Sadie had a huge garden and orchard. She loved her flowers and tended to them with love and pride.
In 1989, Sadie and Earl retired from farming and moved to Grandview. Gardening continued to be a joy and mom distributed many vegetables and flowers (especially her gladiola bouquets) throughout the community and to family and friends.
Quilting was another passion for Sadie. Many quilts were given to her children and grandchildren. There are more of her quilts to be finished and distributed.
Playing cards was one of Sadie’s favorite pastimes. Very few things got in the way of her being home to play cards with her cherished friends or family. Alice, Isabelle and Jim were the last canasta group.
Being active was mom’s way of life. Many hours were spent at the pool with Betty or walking with Vi.
Tamarisk was where Sadie grew up, went to school, attended church and went to picnics and dances. Isabelle and mom worked hard to get the Tamarisk School designated as a municipal heritage site and the Tamarisk Church designated as a provincial heritage site with the complete cooperation of the district.
Sadie was an active community member and volunteer. She was a secretary of Glenlyon School, secretary of Tamarisk School and Tamarisk Hall board, member of Tamarisk Community Club, secretary for the Tamarisk Cemetery and a Sunday school teacher.
After moving to Grandview, Sadie was a faithful member of the Grandview United Church and was secretary of UCW Unit 3 for many years. She was a member of the Grandview Personal Care Home board and delivered meals on wheels. She was also a board member of the Grandview Drop In Centre. Sadie enjoyed being a director for many years at the GP/GV Fair and was later awarded a lifetime membership to the Ag Society.
Sadie was predeceased by her husband Earl Scott; her parents Art and Mamie Shield, her sister Florence Shield; her parents-in-law, George and Lily Scott; her brothers, Art and John Shield; her brothers-in-law, Ed McLarty, Harold Scott and Ray Galloway; her sisters-in-law Margaret Shield, Hazel Galloway and Anita Scott, her nephew Chet Shield, her niece Vera Matilepe, and her beloved grandson Kevin Scott.
