Nicholas “Nick” Solotwinski suddenly passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Roblin District Health Centre at the age of 85 years.
Nick was born in Shell River Municipality on December 8, 1928. He was the son of Mike and Annie (nee Lupichuk) Solotwinski. He briefly attended school at Nova Zora School and then helped his dad on the farm. Nick and his dad cut logs and trapped in the Duck Mountains.
In 1951, Nick married the love of his life, Olga Zacharkiw. Together they farmed until 1967 when they moved to Roblin where Nick worked for the Town of Roblin for the next twenty-five years. He started on the garbage truck; read water meters, worked in the water plant and operated the grader summer and winter. Nick was also a long time member of the Roblin Fire Department, of which he was really proud.
Nick loved fishing, hunting, camping and quading and could tell many stories about his experiences. Many people will miss his stories as much as we will miss him. Nick loved playing cards with his friends and played many games of solitaire. Nick attended Knox United Church when he could and enjoyed the minister’s visits. Nick loved and cared for people and his motto was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Nick loved Ukrainian music and spent many Saturday nights listening to Saturday Night Get Together on CJGX - Yorkton.
Nick is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Olga Solotwinski of Roblin; his daughter, Sophie Siebold and Brian of Hanna, Alberta; his son, Bill and Carol of Souris, Manitoba; his grandchildren, Brandy and Edwin, Barb, Brenda and Charles, Brent and Tsarina, Brad and Marcie, Garret and Nathan; his step grandchildren, Trevor and Ty. He is also survived by six great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hawryluk of Roblin; brother-in-law, Mike Zacharkiw of Dauphin, and sister-in-law Sharon Solotwinski of Houston, B.C,
Nick was predeceased by parents, Mike & Annie Solotwinski; two infant sons, Peter & Harry; brother-in-law, Sylvester Hawryluk; brother, Andrew Solotwinski and nephew, Gerald Hawryluk.
On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at 7:00 P.M., a Service of Comfort was held at the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin, with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating.
Nick’s Funeral Service was held at Knox United Church in Roblin on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. Reverend Mark Hammond’s inspirational service was both genuine and very heartfelt. Carol Gauthier shared the Words of Remembrance. The organist, Mrs Betty Wenner, led Knox United Church Choir and congregation in singing the hymns “The Church In The Wildwood”, “Shall We Gather At The River” and “I Come To The Garden Alone”. Selected Music was “Massey 44”. Casket Bearers were Garret Solotwinski, Brent Siebold, Brad Siebold, Gerald Hawryluk, Dwayne Pastuck and Blaine Barker. The Honourary Casket Bearers were former employees of the Town of Roblin: Glen Rierson, Nick Holopina, Bill Wandy, and Tom Paczkoski. The Honor Guard were Members of the Roblin-Shell River Fire Department; Alf Brade, Kevin Kowalyk, Emil Roller, Reg Becker, Bob Tyschinski, Rhuedi Zahnd, Kevin Smith, Grant White, Mervin Safronetz, Lee Gaber and Arvid Crab (retired).
Interment Service was held at the Roblin District Cemetery. A luncheon followed at the church hall, hosted by the United Church Lunch Committee.
