Myrt (Myrtle) Margaret McKay

Funeral Service for Myrt McKay will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Wolkowski Funeral Service, Roblin with internment to follow at the Roblin Catholic Cemetery.  Memorial Donations in memory of Myrt can be made to the Roblin Community Foundation.
Covid precautions are still in effect and all attending are kindly asked to follow the guidelines.

   The family of Myrtle (Myrt) Margaret McKay announce her passing at Crocus Court Care Home Roblin Manitoba, on Friday, July 31, 2021, at the age of 93 1/2 years. She was born on December 15, 1927, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During her childhood and throughout her life, she loved to sing and could remember hundreds of songs.  Never an event could happen that she couldn't connect it with a song. She attended Goose Lake School, but due to the war years, she quit school in Grade 10, took an egg grading course, and worked for Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Coop (later purchased by Manco Dairies). She worked during the egg-laying season for 42 years. In the off-season, she worked in the Boston Cafe and as an aid in the Roblin Hospital. As a young woman, she worked in Winnipeg cold storage grading eggs shipped to England. She autographed a couple of eggs and was contacted by an English family who she kept writing back and forth for many years!  (She loved her job at Manco Creamery until her retirement.)
   Myrt and Ernie McKay were married on July 10, 1948, and she continued to work in the creamery.
   Mom loved her independence and freedom once she retired. She had spent a lifetime taking care of her siblings as a very young girl and her parents Louise and Bert Robinson, as well as her Mother-in-law, Elizabeth Lafort and dad for many years. Her caring was a part of her nature, and she kept it up, watching and caring for her children and their families. 
   Before every adventure or trip, she always said she made up her mind she would enjoy it, and she did.
   Mom and Dad spent many an evening playing cards or watching hockey, and when it was live, she'd be down at the arena cheering on her Northstars.  Her love of cards was an activity she enjoyed her whole life. Her friends at Maple Manor spent almost every night around the table in one another's suites. Board games and cards were always a hit with her and her grandkids. Mom was very giving, and once you became her friend, it was for life. She loved a good time. You could tell by the sparkle in her eyes, her big beautiful smile and the way she would do her twist that fun was about to begin. She made fun happen.  
   Her love of travel kept her moving. Whether it was a long journey or just around the area, it brought her such excitement and enjoyment. Family or friends were usually the destination place, from BC to Ontario and many places in between. We called her the |"Road Runner," all you had to do was mention a trip, and she was ready to go, dressed up, lipstick and jewelry on, with her bags packed. Several of Mom's trips could have been her last with her quad flips, flings across the highway into a snowbank, boats sinking, getting frozen climbing up a gorge, snowmobile rollovers or airplane near-misses. Still, she'd never miss the next opportunity to go again. They always provided us with big laughs once she was safe. She said they were memories.
   Mom loved spending time with family and friends wherever she went; she made friends because of her outgoing, fun personality. We'd laugh at her opening statement, "Hi, I'm Myrt McKay from Robin Manitoba.' She'd be ready with a joke, and a friendship was born.
   Mom had a kind, generous happy way about her that young and old were drawn to. Many of her grandchildren's friends called her Grandma Myrt because she was fun to be around.
   A lot of people knew she was Clectic; she had collections... of well... lots of things, plates, jewelry, silk flowers, anything pretty and especially dolls from many different countries. She recently acquired a 1 foot by 1-foot patch of land and was anointed "Lady Myrt McKay."  How fitting.
   Once any kind of music started up, she'd be ready to dance, wiggle in her seat, toe-tap or clap; she just couldn't keep still. Mom attended many concerts and was like a kid; her eyes lit up, and she'd sing every song. Her all-time favourite singer was Elvis Presley.
   Mom loved a good time, and her eyes would sparkle, she'd flash her beautiful smile, and everyone knew the fun was about to begin.
   She knew absolutely hundreds of songs by heart, and, on road trips, we girls would sing all that we knew.  Lots were from way before our time but, through the years, we learned them. Only Mom could sing "I Love My Rooster" at a party and remember what animal sound each person there was supposed to make.  We'd cry laughing, and she'd never make a mistake. How we all will miss that silly song.
   We, as a family, will miss her terribly. She was our rock, always there for us no matter what. Struggles, births, deaths, sad times and many more good times, through it all, she faced it with courage, love and helped us meet the future.
   She was predeceased by her husband Ernie in 1986 at the age of 62, her mother Louise Robinson, Stepfather Bert Robinson, Brothers Jimmy and David, Grandson Dallas Prier and many extended family members.
   Myrt and Ernie were blessed with four children, Amy (Russ) Titanich, Ray (Sheila) McKay, Judi (Eldon) Prier and Cassie McKay.
   She will be remembered by her loving family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many friends.
