Mathew "Matt" Deneka Obituary

DENEKA, Mathew “Matt” Born May 29, 1937 ~ December 14, 2023. Aged 86 years.

Matt was born May 29, 1937 in Wroxton, Saskatchewan to Matthew and Polly Deneka nee Peleshytyk.  He received his education at the Mostics school near Wroxton, and was not speaking english when he started.  He left school in grade 7 to help on the family farm.  In 1945 the family moved to Sifton for a few years, moving back to Calder in 1952.

Dad had various jobs throughout his lifetime from working in the logging industry here in Roblin, the pulp mill in Hinton, Alberta, as well as being a mechanic in MacNutt and Roblin.

In 1961 Matt married Ellen Rowan.  Together they raised 6 children: David, Cathy, Deborah, Carolyn, Collin, and Dale.

In the 1970’s, Mom and Dad purchased the family farm and started a mixed farm, they later purchased a farm at Shellmouth adding to their operation.  In 1976 Dad started his 26-year long career with I.M.C. mine in Esterhazy, retiring from the mine in 2002.

Matt enjoyed old fashioned picnics, playing ball, helping at the Keystone Museum, listening to old time country and Ukrainian music, as well as Sunday drives in the country.

In 2017 Matt moved into the Roblin residence, where he lived until his passing.  He greatly enjoyed the socializing with the residence as well as the homecare staff. He always appreciated the help especially when they would make him bacon and eggs.  His scooter added independence making trips for coffee or to do some shopping up town on his own.

Matt was predeceased by his parents Matthew and Polly; wife Ellen Deneka; sister Irene; brothers John and George; grandsons Coty Azure and Adam Klimchuk.

Matt is survived by his three sisters Anne Preyma, Olga Apperly, and Nettie Sachafer; six children David (Bonnie) Deneka, Cathy Deneka (Alvin Azure), Deb (Brian) Klimchuk, Carolyn Deneka (Barry Ludwig), Collin, and Dale (Tanya) Deneka; grandchildren Darnell, Myranda Deneka, Shelby Eccles, Conway Azure, Mathew, Stephen, Jonathan Kilmchuk, Braden, Hannam Kelsey Deneka; and 11 great grandchildren.
