In Loving Memory of
Lena Wilma Boychuk
(nee German)
1929 – 2016
It is with deep sadness and sorrow that the family announces the passing of their mother and Granny Lena Boychuk on August 16, 2016 at the age of 86 years.
Lena was born in Canora, Saskatchewan on November 21st 1929. She was the only child of Peter and Anne German (nee Slowski). Her mother passed away when Lena was an infant. Her father remarried Anne Shordee, and her son Edward joined the family. They proceeded to add more children to their family; Margaret, Matt, Steve and Lawrence.
After her public education, Lena was busy with babysitting and housekeeping jobs before marrying John Boychuk in 1952. Lena and John started their new life together as they farmed in the Postup, Manitoba District. Johnny passed away in 1971. At that time, Lena was a nurse’s aide at Roblin District Hospital. She moved into town with her two daughters Rose Marie and Jean into their new home.
Lena was a very active member of the Holy Redeemer Ukrainian Catholic Church and supported St. Vladimir's College. She enjoyed making perogies and canning with the other women of the Parish. Lena, was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, The Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, and Rebekah Lodge. She devoted her time to helping her family and friends. Even following her retirement, she could still be seen driving people to their appointments or sharing a pot of soup with ill friends.
Eventually, Lena moved into the Roblin Residence and enjoyed the companionship of likeminded individuals. She could hardly wait for her daughter Rose Marie and son in law Gord Hodge to visit from Calgary, as well as her daughter Jean and her son in law George Koch with grandchildren Bryce and Abby. She was especially proud of Bryce entering the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Nursing while Abby shared Granny’s passion of animals and gardening by studying Environmental Science at University of Manitoba.
Lena was predeceased by her parents; Peter and Anne (nee Slowski) German, her step- mother Anne (nee Shordee) German, her beloved husband John Boychuk, her step- brother Edward and her half- brothers; Steve and Lawrence.
Lena is survived by her daughters; Rose Marie Boychuk and her husband Gord Hodge, Jean and her husband George Koch, her grandchildren; Bryce Koch and Abby Koch, her half- brother Matt German and her half- sister Margaret Hartmier.
Prayers were held at Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home with Father Peter Pidskalny officiating.
Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Ukrainian Catholic Church in Roblin with Father Bohdan Lukie officiating. Victor Sorochuk served as Cantor.
The Casket Bearers; George Koch, Bryce Koch, Myron Sorokopud, Nathan Jones, Richard Wutzke, and Peter Jones carried Lena to her final resting place beside her beloved husband John in the Roblin Catholic Cemetery.
Following the Interment Service, a memorial reception was held in the lower auditorium of Holy Redeemer Church, hosted by Rose and Ted Charbonneau.
The family would be like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Roblin Personal Care Home, Roblin District Hospital, Dr. Aziz and Dr. George as well as the many dedicated and compassionate staff members.
