In Loving Memory of

Kenneth Sheldon Addis

1939 – 2016

Ken Addis, aged 76 years of Roblin, Manitoba passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2016 surrounded by his family at the Roblin District Health Centre.

Kenneth Sheldon Addis was born on May 17, 1939 in the old Roblin Hospital.  He was a son of Andy and Mabel (nee Henderson) Addis.

Ken grew up in the Sunny Slope area and went to school at Makaroff, Manitoba.  After completing his education, he held various jobs including working for hydro, area farmers and working in the bush- where he loved working with the horses.  Eventually, he ended up taking a course through Esso in Winnipeg where he learned to run various service and parts departments over the years.

On April 17, 1964 he married Jean Duns.  Later that year, they welcomed their first son, Leonard, who was born in Dauphin.

In June of 1968, the family moved back to Roblin where Ken pursued a position with the highways department.  After a few years, he became the foreman- a position that he held until his retirement.  During this time, he made lots of friends (and a few enemies) with semi drivers on the infamous valley hill.

In 1969, Ken and Jean welcomed their second son, Leslie, to the family, also born at Dauphin.  Later in 1970, they moved to Grace and Ross Henderson’s old farm in the Deepdale area.

In 1973, they moved to their current home in Roblin.  Ken worked with the highways department until he retired at the age of 57.  After this he worked for Neil and Jeannette Boyce for about nine years.  He then hung up his farming hat and picked up his retirement hat, one of many hats that he had on his porch.

Ken enjoyed many activities including camping, fishing, dancing, just a little bit of relaxing, and of course, reading.  He could read up to 12 books a week, all of which were often westerns.  Louis L’Amour was his favorite author.  He never finished the last book he was reading, so here is the last paragraph so that we can close the book for him: “Lorna glanced up at Wiley and beamed a smile. “His name is Daniel.  Daniel Thompson’”.

Ken also took up scrollwork and turned out some amazing artwork.  In fact, Ken’s urn was one his many creations.

He was predeceased by his parents; Andy and Mabel (nee Henderson) Addis, his brothers-in-law; Art Duns and Roger Duns, and his parents-in-law; Jack and Mildred Duns.

Surviving to mourn Ken and cherish many fond memories are his beloved wife Jean Addis of Roblin, his sons Len (Lisa) Addis of Roblin, Les (Kim) Addis of Roblin, his five grandchildren; Chris (Sonia), Mandi, Curtis, Brayden (Becky) and Carter and his three great grandchildren; Ali, Briar and Sloan.  Ken will also be missed by his brother George (Eve) Addis of Roblin, his brother-in-law Doug (Rose Duns) of Scotland, his sisters-in-law Mary (Arnold) Thera of Winnipeg and Tres Duns of Creston, British Columbia as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family and a host of friends.

Ken’s Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Knox United Church in Roblin with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating.  The processional music was “Red River Valley“ by Gene Autrey.  Ken’s grandson, Chris Addis delivered the Eulogy.  Kim Addis, Sonia Jensen and Ali Hammond provided Scripture readings.  Allison Shearer-Craig and Bob and Betty Dayson performed the special music “Home on the Range”, “You are My Sunshine” and led congregation in singing the recessional hymn, “I’ll Fly Away”.  Ken’s family requested that all of those whose lives were touched by Ken to consider themselves Honorary Bearers.

The Urn Bearers, grandsons Curtis Addis and Brayden Addis carried Ken to his final resting place in Roblin District Cemetery.  Following the Interment Service, a reception was held in in the auditorium of Knox United Church, hosted by the United Church Lunch Committee.
