With great sadness, the family of James Semchuk announces his peaceful passing on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Roblin District Health Centre at the age of 95 years.
James was born on September 21, 1919 in the Drifting River District, R.M. of Gilbert Plains, MB. He was a son of Michael and Olena Symchych. James attended the Kolomaya School.
In 1935, the Symchych family moved to Shortdale, Manitoba. James grew up on the farm. Later he worked locally on farms and logging until he joined the Royal Canadian Artiliary and served his country during WW2 from March 10, 1941 to December 24, 1945.
James was united in Holy Matrimony to Doris Bilinsky of Vista, MB,on July 16, 1953 at Oakburn, Manitoba. This union was blessed with three children; Sonya, Arnold and Greg.
Farming was James’ main livelihood. He also worked as a seasonal carpenter and enjoyed fishing, deer and moose hunting. For James, “number one” was his love of family. Everything in his life revolved around this. Later in life, James lived on the farm with his son Arnold.
James was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Olena Symchych; his wife Doris in 2002; his son Greg in 2007; his brothers, Tony, Mike, John, Bill, Nick, Steve, Walter and Emil; and his sisters, Bessie Pankiw, Mary Stadnyk, Rose Semchuk and Elizabeth Chuchmuch.
Left to mourn his passing, and cherish many fond memories are his son, Arnold Semchuk of Grandview, Manitoba; his daughter, Sonya Jobb of Winnipeg, Manitoba; his granddaughters, Melanie Jobb and Candace Jobb of Winnipeg and his great-grandson Mason Jobb of Winnipeg. A niece, Marlene Pryzner of Winnipeg, MB was very close to James. James will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Prayer Vigil Service was held Friday January 23, 2015 at 7:00 PM from the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin. The Royal Canadian Legion conducted a Poppy Memorial Tribute.
The Funeral Service was held Saturday, January 24 2015, at 09:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Roblin, with Rev. Fr, Brent Kuzyk officiating assisted by the Orthodox Choir. Cross Bearer was Willy Stadnyk and Sacristan was Russell Nykolaishyn. Following the Funeral Service a Memorial Dinner was served by the Orthodox Ladies at Roblin ’50 and Over Club.
James was then laid to rest at Holy Ghost Orthodox Cemetery at Petlura, Manitoba by Casket Bearers; Bill Semchych, John Stadnyk, Wayne Milson, Richard Bilinsky, Delmar Kukurudz, and Jim Krichkowski. The Honour Guard were members of The Royal Canadaian Legion.
