In Loving Memory of
Hertha Schmollinger
1925 – 2016
On Sunday, January 3, 2016 God called Hertha of Roblin, Manitoba home to heaven at the age of 90. She passed away at the Roblin District Health Centre with family by her side.
Hertha was born in Manitoba in the Shevlin District on November 5, 1925 , the second child of John and Lydia (nee Nernberg) Brening. On December 6, 1925, she received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. On April 28, 1940 she publicly confessed her Christian faith and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shevlin.
When she started school in Shevlin, she did not speak any English, she only knew German. She completed her grade 8 and then helped out on the farm and worked out babysitting and house cleaning.
On July 30, 1950 Hertha was joined together in holy matrimony to Emil Schmollinger. They farmed in the Shevlin district until 1972 when they sold the farm and moved into town. In 1976 Hertha completed a 6 month course in Adult Education through ACC. She then worked at the Roblin District Health Centre as Activities Director from 1977 to 1990 when she retired.
Hertha was a 4-H leader for many years, a Board Member of the Roblin Community Help Centre for Seniors and also served on the Fair Board. She kept very busy with all kinds of crafts, knitting, needlepoint, sewing, quilting, refinishing and upholstering furniture (especially antiques) and decorating many wedding cakes. She excelled at whatever she did. Hertha enjoyed curling for many years and spending time at their cabin at Lake of the Prairies. She spent many hours fishing and taught her great nephews how to fillet fish.
Hertha’s Christian faith was a very important part of her life. She did not like to miss church and she sang in the church choir for years and helped out with VBS and quilting.
Hertha was predeceased by her parents; John Brening in 1930 and Lydia in 1956, her infant brother Emil in 1928 and sister Anna Mohr in 2005, her parents-in-law Jacob and Ernestine Schmollinger in 1982 and 1979.
God blessed Hertha’s life with many special people as she served God in her vocations at home, church, at work and in the community. She is survived by Emil, her loving husband of 65 years, numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin with Pastor Barry Wood officiating. The organist, Debbie Funk led the congregational hymns; “Rock of Ages”, “I Know that My Redeemer Lives” and “Behold a Host Arrayed in White”.
The Funeral Service was held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 1:00 PM at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Roblin with Pastor Barry Wood officiating. The organist, Debbie Funk led the congregational hymns; “I’m But a Stranger Here”, “Abide with Me” and “A Mighty Fortress”. The St. Matthew’s Quartet performed “Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me”.
Hertha was carried to her final resting place in Shevlin District Cemetery at Shevlin, Manitoba by the Casket Bearers, Gilbert Mohr, Brian Mohr, Glen Bodnariuk, Don Schmollinger, Victor Dzikowski and Gerald Liske.

Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little – But not for long
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me – But let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to your friends that we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me – But let me go.
