In Loving Memory of

Gladys May Craig

1911 – 2014

Gladys May Craig, age 102 years of Roblin, Manitoba, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Roblin District Health Centre.

Gladys May Rawlings was born September 30, 1911 in MacNutt, Saskatchewan, the fourth child of George and Fanny (nee Wilson) Rawlings.  She attended school in Dropmore and as well as enjoying her school subjects she enjoyed playing soccer and softball.

Upon graduating, she remained home to help her mother look after her younger sister and brother, as their father had passed away when Gladys was sixteen.  During this time, she became a fan of the Rochedale Rangers Football Team. In 1934, she married William Craig, the goalkeeper for the Rangers.  They began farming in the Rochedale district on NW 4-24-28, where she resided until 1994.

In 1935, their only son, Roy, was born.  Gladys’ focus was always her family: her husband, son, daughter-in-law and later her three grandchildren who she loved having around her on the farm.

Gladys worked hard on the farm, raising her family and enjoyed curling (especially the Dropmore Bonspiel with her sisters-in-law) and spent many hours in her yard and garden keeping them in beautiful shape. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards and for many years was a regular bingo player at the Roblin Community Hall.

She belonged to the Rochedale Ladies Club and was a member of the Dropmore United Church and the Dropmore Curling Club.  In 1994, she moved to Maple Manor in Roblin and joined the Roblin Drop-In Centre, the Inglis Senior Centre and Knox United Church.

Gladys was predeceased by her parents, George and Fannie Rawlings; her husband, William Craig; daughter-in-law, Doris (Edwards) Craig; brother, Walter (Elizabeth Hunt); sisters, Lillian (Bert Hunt), Beatrice (Roger Cameron), Hazel (Joe Herbert).

Gladys is survived by her brother Jack (Mildred Ferris) Rawlings of Roblin; her son, Roy and daughter-in-law Marie (Cosens) of Stonewall; her grandchildren, Valerie (Shane Neifer), Kevin (Allison Shearer) and Colyn (Roslyn Darroch); six great grandsons, Malcolm and Leith Neifer, Calum and Liam Craig, Declan and Paden Craig and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family called to pay their respects on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 7:00 PM at the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin.

Gladys Craig’s Funeral Service was held Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 2:00 PM from Roblin Knox United Church with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating. The organist, Allison Shearer–Craig, and Bob and Betty Dayson led the congregation in singing the hymns “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”, “Amazing Grace”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.

Following the Funeral Service, the Tummel Ladies hosted a reception in the Church Hall.

Family Interment Service was held prior to the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at Deer-Park Cemetery, Tummel, Manitoba. Casket Bearers were Kevin Craig, Calum Craig, Colyn Craig, Ron Koroway, Doug Lyon and Lawrence Smith.
