In Loving Memory of

Chester Eugene Brumwell

1925 - 2014

Chester Eugene Brumwell was born November 7, 1918 in Whitchurch TWF, York Country, Ontario. He was the fourth of seven children born to Chester and Velma Brumwell.

The family moved to Deepdale in 1925 when Gene was in grade one. In his younger years, he worked crushing grain and logging for his dad and threshing for surrounding neighbors. In 1941, Eugene answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy.

In 1942, Gene married the love of his life- Edith Cross. During the war years, Gene was stationed in Halifax and Edie joined him there. He was active on D-Day on a landing craft on the Shores of Normandy. In 1945, Gene and Edie moved back to Manitoba and farmed together until 1966.

“The Farm” was a favorite place for all of the nephews and nieces, on both sides of the family, to spend weekends and summer holidays. “Uncle Gene” was kind, loving and patient, and was a wise role model and educator. He never hesitated to teach the “true facts of life” on the farm.

In 1966 Gene and Edie moved to Roblin where Gene was employed in the Roblin Post Office until June 1980 when he  retired.

Gene was an active Mason and Shriner for many years. He took pride in his yard and garden - but oh did he love to golf - and a good golfer he was!! Many of the shrubs and perennials you see on the clubhouse grounds were probably planted by Eugene and Edie. Gene was a very generous man who quietly donated to many local organizations and charities and never wanted any recognition.

Gene and Edie’s marriage was blessed with one daughter Joan, who sadly died of cancer in 1960 at the age of 14.

Despite the sorrow of losing his daughter Joan, Gene always had the time to help out Bill and Nora Cross’ kids when needed. For many years we have thought of him as “Dad” and his home as ours. He was always there to lend a hand, provide much love and affection when the going got tough, and to render an occasional “cuff on the ears” as required. It was any wonder that he was sincerely loved and respected and known to the next two generations as Grandpa Gene and Great Grandpa B.

In 2008, due to failing health, Edie was admitted to Crocus Court P.C.H. Gene visited with her faithfully every day. When Gene’s health began to fail he also became part of the Crocus Court PCH family. Sadly in 2011, Gene’s beloved wife of almost 69 years, passed away. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his “adopted” children, grand children and great-grand children and many nieces and nephews and friends.

A private graveside service to celebrate Gene’s life and honour his memory was held Monday, November 10, 2014 at Deer Park Cemetery in Tummel, Manitoba with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating.

Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife Edie and their daughter Joan. He was also predeceased by his parents Chester and Velma Brumwell, his parents-in-law Stafford and Alice Cross, all of his brothers and sisters, all of his brothers and sisters-in-laws.

“Gentleman Gene” served his country and community well; and he loved us all. Reunited with Edie and Joan - Rest in Peace “Uncle/Grandpa Gene.
