Elsie Emma Ellener Chase
1917 - 2015
Elsie Emma Ellener Chase passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the Roblin District Health Center on Friday, May 29th, 2015 at the age of 97.
Elsie Shiner was born on Sept 27, 1917 at Bield, Manitoba to Albert & Elizabeth (nee Weller) Shiner. She had one sister and four brothers. She grew up on the family farm in the Bield District. She attended the Bield School, and after school Elsie did housework for a few people in the community.
On Sept 30, 1936 Elsie (Shiner) married Harold Chase at the L.A. Chase Homestead in Bield in a double wedding ceremony, the other happy couple being Elsie’s brother, Bill Shiner, and Harold’s sister, Ruth Chase. On Sept 30, 2006, together they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.
After Elsie and Harold were married, they farmed until 1977, other than from 1956 to 1958 when they lived in Winfield, BC and were in the logging business with Harold’s brother, Paul. During the early years of their marriage, Elsie would harness and drive an 8-horse team in the fields. In 1977, they moved to Grandview to pastor the Free Methodist Church until 1988 before retiring to the Bield area to live in a home on their son Ken and Linda’s farm. In 1999, they moved into Maple Manor in Roblin.
Besides being a fulltime wife and mother, Elsie cooked with her sister-in-laws Gertie, Millie and Ruth, at summer church camps at Moose Jaw and Bield. She worked for Charlie & Mable Brade in Roblin after most of her children were gone from home.
Over the years, Elsie’s hobbies included quilting, crossword puzzles, reading and watching her favorite TV game shows (Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune). Elsie was known for her sense of humor and always loved a good laugh.
Elsie enjoyed spending time with family & friends at every stage of her life. She was often referred to as a “Social Butterfly”. She made friends easily as she was not afraid to talk to people she didn’t know and to make them feel important. During Elsie and Harold’s time spent at Grandview, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Family Camps at Winfield, BC, Winkler and Killarney, MB, Moose Jaw and Arlington Beach, SK, and most recently residing at Maple Manor, her circle of friends grew.
Elsie loved the Lord and that was evident in her daily living, her commitment to the church, her family and friends. She didn’t just talk her faith, she lived it. She was an active member of the Free Methodist Church at Bield and Roblin, and attended regularly until the later years of her life. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and was involved with the Women’s Missionary Society. Elsie and Harold were involved in supporting a new church at Fort McMurray.
Elsie is lovingly remembered by her seven boys and three girls – Gary (Lois) Chase of Arlington Beach, SK; Wayne Chase of Port Alberni, BC; Ken (Linda) Chase of Roblin; Wes (Mary Ann) Chase of Port Alberni, BC; Sharon (Les) Buckmaster of Manor, SK; Beryl Cowan of Swan River; Gloria (Earl) Belcourt of Cobble Hill, BC; Dean (Val) Chase of Barrhead, AB; Dale (Linda) Chase of Roblin; and Byron (Joyce) Chase of Okotoks, AB; 25 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and her brother, Eldon Shiner from Kelowna BC.
She is predeceased by her husband, Harold; three grandchildren, Kevin and Steven Chase and Nedra (Chase) Yurkowski; her parents, Albert and Elizabeth Shiner; brothers Earl, Bill & Harold; sister Myrtle Bailey; parent-in-laws LeRoy and Ethel Chase and brother-in-laws Jack Bailey, George Keay, Philo, Floyd, Forrie, Dave, Paul and Bert Chase; and sister-in-laws Irene Keay, Ethel, Kate, Adeline, Adella, Edna and Gertie Chase, Ruth, Millie, Lorna and Margaret Shiner.
A family time of remembrance was held on Thursday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin.
A Celebration of Elsie’s life was held from the Roblin Free Methodist Church on Friday, June 5th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Heath Butler officiating. The processional hymn was “Angels in the Room”. The organist, Beth Hojnocki, the pianist, Becca Butler and the song leader, Floyd Martens led the congregation in singing the hymns; “He Hideth My Soul” and “My Jesus I Love Thee”. Elsie’s sons, Gary and Dale Chase read the Scripture Readings from Isaiah 12. Her daughters, Sharon Buckmaster, Beryl Cowan and Gloria Belcourt delivered the Eulogy. Angela Martens and Laura Forster, granddaughters, provided special music. The recessional hymn was “Look for Me for I Will Be There Too”.
