Elizabeth (Liz) Doreen Wiwcharuk, age 78, died on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB following complications of a procedure. She was surrounded by all immediate family at the time of her death, which is the way should would have wanted it. Liz was born to Antonia (Ciunyk) and Mike Motkaluk at the Swan River Hospital and was the fourth youngest of eleven children.
Liz married the love of her life Donald (Don) Wiwcharuk on September 23, 1966 in Gilbert Plains, MB. Together, they built a life on the farm as wheat farmers just South of the Municipality of Gilbert Plains. Their son Brian (Roberta) Wiwcharuk reside in Sturgis, SK and daughter Shonna (Ron) Newans and their adult children Savannah and Brennan (Kalena) reside in Winnipeg. Liz was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Anne and Cassandra, as well as her brothers Harry, Nelson and Russel.
Graduating as a Licenced Practical Nurse (CLPNM), Liz met her calling and devoted herself to a 30-year long service career at the Gilbert Plains Hospital, as well as the Gilbert Plains Medical Clinic/Health Centre and Personal Care Home. Liz will be remembered by her gentle, nurturing bedside manner as a nurse, mother and friend. She is known for her ‘say it like it is’ way and she was always there to selflessly and intuitively pick you up, dust you off and get you back out there.
Being an active member of the Gilbert Plains community, whether Liz was spending her time baking for numerous bake sales or spending time with friends and family, namely best friends Linda Taylor and late Mini Tycholes, whilst playing cards, sharing home-made desserts and exchanging laughter, her touching expression of love that anyone who crossed her path received, knew immediately that her door was forever open and they are always welcome. Liz also very passionately and actively played a large role on the Board for the Gilbert Plains Drop-Inn Centre for many years; running BINGO for the seniors and obtaining grants for remodelling and upgrading of the historical Drop-Inn Centre building.
Over the years, Liz was always there, present and waiting with a big smile to be part of the lives that she graced. From Brian and Shonna’s volley-ball games to weddings to others’ last moments, Liz was the best support, and never failed to cheer those on around her. She loved to invest in her grandchildren’s events and interests every single time an opportunity presented itself.
Being the loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, close friend, amazing listener and hip grandma, Liz was unstoppable until the stars silently aligned. With all immediate family members rallied around her, she grew her angel wings with our blessings.
A funeral service will be held at a later date in Gilbert Plains.
