Effie was born to Alex and Annie Yakubchuk in Ethelbert, Manitoba. She was the youngest of their daughters. Effie was raised in the Town of Ethelbert, as well as attended school there. One of her fondest memories was her sisters and friends going Christmas caroling door to door .
After her school age years, she moved to Grandview. She began working as waitress in a local cafe.
It was during this time she met Mike Furkalo and was married in 1954. Together Mike and Effie farmed. During those years she worked hard on the farm tending to cows and home, while Mike worked the fields. They farmed and raised a family together, until 1986, when Mike suddenly passed away. After his passing, Effie decided it was time for a career change.
She went back to school to be trained as a Home Care Aide. After the graduation she got a job in Gilbert Plains, looking after and caring for the elderly. A position she held there for 12 years.
Effie was a very social and active person in her younger years. She worked tirelessly with the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League helping with weddings, funerals and various church gatherings. Many people would often say that she had a quick pace serving tables and always with a smile. During Effie's down time she enjoyed her large garden and flowers. Berry picking and canning were important activities, something she truly enjoyed.
Effie is forever remembered by; her two sons Glenn (Janlyn) and Dale (Lovey), grandchildren Geoffrey, Andrew, Nick and Reece.
She is predeceased by her parents, husband Mike, husband Paul.
