In Loving Memory of

Edward Steve Styba

1937 - 2014

Edward Steve Styba passed away peacefully at Roblin District Health Centre on Friday, June 27, 2014, at the age of 76 years,

Edward Steve Styba was born November 20, 1937 to parents Steve and Mary (nee Soltys) Styba in the RM of Shell River, Manitoba.  Ed was the youngest of three children, and shared many fond memories with his siblings Victor and Florence over the years.

Ed attended Glen Eden School until grade eight and completed grade nine in Bield.  He took his grade ten by correspondence and completed his final two years at the high school in Roblin.  After this, he moved to Vancouver to work for a year before returning home, where he took a job at Macleod’s and worked on the farm.

On July 15, 1964 Ed married Alice Yakimishyn.  One year later they were blessed with a daughter, Deborah.

Ed and Alice owned and operated Hillside Store, north of Roblin, for three years.  In 1973, they built a new home at the farm.  At this time, Ed also worked at the Parkland Repair Shop.  In the mid-eighties he went back to work at Macleod’s, where he worked for a total of seventeen years.

Ed had a great memory for details, and whether he was welding railings or painting the whole farm blue, everything had to be done “just so”.  Even when hours in the workshop gave way to word searches in the kitchen he still remained particular about his “tools”, always needing his clipboard and the right blue pen.

Ed served as a school trustee for the Intermountain School Division for nine years.  He also sat on the Credit Union Board of Directors for thirteen years.  During all of this time he continued to farm.  When Debbie married Dennis Beck they farmed together, both grain and cattle, for a number of years.

Ed had many hobbies and was a “jack of all trades” - welder, electrician, plumber, painter, carpenter, farmer and cattleman.  He enjoyed time spent in the workshop and spent countless hours there.  You can still find his inventions and creations all around the farm.

Ed was a quiet man, but he enjoyed a good visit and had a big sense of humor.  He had a funny little smirk and he loved a good joke.  His sense of humor was never lost, even as he faced health battles and time in the hospital.  Many people have remarked that they will miss having visits with him uptown and the evening coffee crowd won't be the same without him.  He enjoyed visiting the boys and hearing hunting stories every fall.  Even when he was in the hospital he asked about Travis' calves every day.

Ed was a reliable neighbor and a good friend to many.  He was slow and steady and reasonable.  A man of few words, he had a big heart.  He was caring, soft hearted, soft spoken, and emotional, even if he didn't always show it.  He was proud of his grandchildren and took pride in his family as a whole. He will be missed.

Ed is survived by his wife Alice Styba of fourty-nine years, his daughter Debbie and Dennis Beck, his grandchildren Melissa and Mark Moffit and Travis and Trista Beck, and one great grandson Marshall Moffit, all of Roblin. He is also survived by sister-in-law Laura Styba of Surrey, BC, and brother-in-law Michael and Louise Yakimishyn of Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was pre-deceased by his parents; Steve and Mary Styba, his brother Victor, his sister Florence and her husband Walter Lukey as well as his mother-in-law and father-in-law Michael and Anne Yakimishyn.

Prayer Vigil Service was held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 7:30 PM from the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in  Roblin.

Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10:00 AM from St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church north of Roblin, with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak officiating assisted by the Cantor Victor Sorochuk.  Melissa Moffit delivered the Eulogy. Casket Bearers were Travis Beck, Kelly Boyce, Frank Hyndman, Mark Moffit, Mike Soltys and Ron Yakimishyn. The Cross Bearer was Mike Shendervich and the Sacristan was Brian Senderewich.

Following the Interment Service at St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery, a Memorial Dinner was served at St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery.
