In Loving Memory of

Edward Mohr

1931 - 2014

Edward Mohr passed away peacefully with his loving wife at his side at the Roblin Personal Care Home on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the age of 83 years.

Edward was born March 22, 1931 at the home on his parent’s farm in Shevlin, Manitoba. He was the second youngest child of eleven born to Henry and Anna (nee Wagner) Mohr. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shevlin. He received his education at Shell Vale School.

Ed worked for many farmers at a very young age. He later came to work for Herman and Marie Gottlieb and there he fell in love with the farmer’s daughter Marie. They were married July 13, 1956 and bought the Gottlieb farm in the Cromarty District. Marie felt she never left home. They were proud parents of Marvin, Karen, Leann, Angela and Michael. They had a mixed farming operation. Marvin farmed many years with his dad and Ed was proud to be a partner with his son. They were excellent farmers and the Lord blessed us. Ed was very proud of their lovely home, yard and what they had accomplished.

When Ed retired he rented his land and cattle out. He was forever driving his truck checking out the neighbour’s crops and stopping in for coffee to see what they were doing. He loved bantering with friends (especially Don Timoruski) going to coffee shops, and teasing the older ladies. He loved to take his grandchildren and sons-in-law for drives looking for wildlife. He loved making homemade sausage and passed on the tradition to his family and always said his sausage was the best!

Ed was proud to take his family to church every Sunday and held many positions – Parish Church Treasurer, Elder, Usher and helped with the Jack Fish Lutheran Camp. He belonged to the Roblin Kinsmen Club (won best beard contest) and served as a delegate for many years with the Canadian Co-operative Implements.  He loved to sing with his loud voice, and his singing will be missed at church. Ed was famous for singing “Happy Birthday” and never missed calling each family member on their special day.

After the closure of the St. John’s Church in Shevlin, it became a sad sight of disrepair. Ed along with his fellow parishioners dismantled the church.  They saved the original steeple and cross and placed it behind a beautiful cairn.  He found great comfort in knowing that his fellow Shevlin members and community had a sacred memorial site.

Ed survived a train accident and heart operation. Ed and Marie’s 50th wedding anniversary was a huge highlight with family, relatives and friends. The children, spouses and grandchildren did such a wonderful job of entertaining and planning.  We were happy to have such good memories, pictures, and celebrate with everyone.

One of Ed’s saddest moments in life was when his family chain was broken.  In 2010, his son in-law Terry Davey was taken from us in a motorcycle accident.

Edward is survived by his wife Marie of fifty-seven years. He was a loving father to son Marvin (Genevieve), grandson Nigel Gaber (Kayla), great grandchild Liv, daughter Karen Davey, grandchildren Kaleigh (Jess), Garrett, Janaye, daughter Leann Nattrass (Scott), grandchildren Kira, Whitney, daughter Angela Pollock (Stu) grandchildren Calem, Eric, Liam, Son Michael (Amber), grandchildren Seth, Halle, Carys. Also surviving are his brothers Jack (Agnes) Mohr, Victor Mohr, sisters-in-law Clara Mohr, Alfreda (Keith) Fulford, Theresa Baumung, Margaret Gottlieb, brothers-in-law Mike Gottlieb, James (Agnes) Gottlieb, David Gottlieb and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his parents Henry and Anna Mohr, his sisters Emma and George Mitchel, Olga and Emil Arndt, Elsie and Ben Zelmer, Lottie and John Trupp, his brothers Balzar and Eileen Mohr, Daniel Mohr, Alexander Mohr, Bill and Elsie Mohr. In-laws Maria and Herman Gottlieb, brothers in-law Carl, Alfred Gottlieb, Erwin Baumung, his son-in-law Terry Davey, and many nephews and nieces whom he cared deeply about.

Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was strong in his faith, and will be missed by his family and friends.  God blessed Ed with a holy death and took him home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.

Evening Services were held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM from the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin.

Edward Mohr’s Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, June 18. 2014 at 2:00 PM from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Roblin, with Pastor Barry Wood officiating. The organist, Mrs. Debbie Funk led the congregation in singing the hymns “I’m But A Stranger Here” and “How Great Thou Art”. St. Matthew’s Lutheran Quartet sang “Just As I Am” and “Precious Lord Take My Hand”.

Casket Bearers were Rodney Arndt, Brent Baumung, Garrett Davey, Nigel Gaber, Tim Mohr and Calem Pollock. Honourary Casket Bearers were all of Ed’s precious Grandchildren.

Following the Interment Service at Roblin District Cemetery, the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Ladies Aid hosted a reception at the Roblin ’50 and Over Club.
