Dustin Nemetchek (Little D) Obituary

Dustin Nemetchek: Marvel movie fan, food connoisseur, sports car expert, and life of the party died on April 15, 2018.  He was the son of Mel and Shanna Nemetchek, born in Edmonton, Alberta.  When Dustin was 10 months old his family moved back to Manitoba and settled in San Clara.  There, he was followed by his sisters Jasmine and Alana.  As the cooler older brother he was the leader, and was always the one in charge of the remote.  He loved food, especially his Baba’s perogies, and he spent his whole life finding the best restaurants with the best chicken fingers and the theatres with the best popcorn.  He attended Roblin Elementary and Goose Lake High, where his friends gave him the nickname Little D.  It was eventually discovered that Dustin had the same disease as his sister Jasmine, Schimke Immunoosseous Dysplasia, and in 2000 he went into kidney failure.  Dustin received a kidney transplant from his dad, which gave him the chance to be a teenager again.  He loved cruising the streets of Roblin with his friends, going to movies and playing basketball.  In 2003, Dustin was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, cancer in his hip, and he underwent chemotherapy during his Grade 12 year.  Dustin fought hard to attend his graduation ceremony, and received the Spirit of the Youth award for his strength and resilience.  Later that fall, Dustin had a hip replacement that was more complicated than anticipated.  When he was finally able to leave the hospital and go home the doctors didn’t believe he would last long, but Dustin defied the odds and bounced back.
As he got better, he was proud to buy his first car, a black Honda Prelude he swore he would have until the day he died.  Alas, the car was totalled long before that, but he put many miles on it going to see the girls in Swan River.  Eventually, Dustin moved to Winnipeg where he became a promoter and quickly made a name for himself as Little D.  Event planning and promotion came naturally to him, as he loved bringing people together.  He was a legend in the Winnipeg nightlife scene, and the ultimate networker.  People gravitated towards him, as he made them feel good about themselves and made sure everyone around him had a good time.  He lived by the motto “we’re here for a good time, not a long time”, and took those words more seriously than most.  He dreamed up business ideas with friends, bought and sold too many cars to remember, and built his life and made his mark in the face of so many obstacles.  Once he decided he wanted to do something, he was unstoppable.
In late 2014 Dustin got an overwhelming infection and had to spend many months in the hospital before he was able to come back to San Clara to live with his parents.  He settled into this quieter and simpler life while still working and promoting events via social media.  He could’ve been angry about the things that had happened to him that were beyond his control, but he wasn’t.  He got up and lived each day and made this new life work for him, becoming even more of an expert in all the latest movies and TV shows, learning about cryptocurrencies and discovering new restaurants to show his friends.  No matter what was happening to him he never stopped caring about others, whether it was the dad of one of his friends who was sick in the hospital, or a friend going through a hard time, Dustin was invested in you and would always be there for you.  Nothing would change his colourful sense of humour, as Dustin loved to shock people and make them laugh.
In March, Dustin was told he was in end stage heart failure.  The doctor didn’t have much hope, but the doctors had been wrong about him before.  So in his last days, Dustin was still scheming and making plans, researching where he could fly with his oxygen tank on the best amount of Air Miles, planning a trip out to Vancouver to see the mountains and the ocean, and looking forward to Avengers Infinity War.  He faced the many challenges life threw at him bravely, and always fought to live, and for this we are so proud of him.  Dustin is predeceased by his sister Jasmine, his uncle Lyndon Styba, and his Papa Mervin Styba.  He will be fiercely missed and always loved by his dad and mom Mel and Shanna, his sister Alana, his Baba Wilna Styba, his paternal grandparents Bernie and Carolyn Nemetchek, his best friend Jordy Steciuk, his many friends and extended family, and by all the people he touched just by being himself.  #stillwinning
