Betty was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on March 27, 1924. The family moved from Russell to Roblin by horse and buggy when Betty was ten years old. She completed her schooling in Roblin and furthered her education at Business College in Winnipeg. She returned to Roblin where she worked for the Royal Bank for five years prior to marrying Harold Keast on April 27, 1949.
After losing two children in childbirth, Betty and Harold adopted Mary in 1954 and Sheila in 1958. Mary and Sheila consider themselves incredibly blessed.
In 1964, after Mary and Sheila were in school, Betty went to work for Fred Newton at his insurance agency. The Newton family became and continued to be an important part of her life. Fred sold the business to Borden Hawyrluk and Betty worked there until she retired.
In addition to her work and family, Betty was an active member of the community. Her Church life was particularly important. She was the organist for years at Knox United, playing for numerous weddings, funerals and regular Sunday services. She was a member of the UCW, the Bible Study Group, the Church Board, the Choir, and she also taught Sunday school.
Betty was well known for her baking and cooking abilities. She sent many delicious items home with her girls when they came to visit. She also enjoyed ceramics, knitting, and walking. The "Coffee Girls" were very special to Betty.
In addition to her children, her grandchildren were her greatest joy. Betty possessed a great wit, kindness, and generosity. She had a smile that would light up a room. She loved to tease and laugh and she always thought of others before herself. Betty has left her family with many proud memories. She will be greatly missed.
Betty’s Funeral Service and celebration of her life was held at the Knox United Church in Roblin on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating. The organist, Mrs. Betty Wenner, led Knox United Choir and congregation in singing the hymns; “How Great Thou Art”, “Breathe On Me Breath of God”, “Make Me A Channel of Your Peace”, and “He Leadeth Me”. The Choral Benediction was “Go In Love”. Bob and Betty Dayson sang the selection “Wind Beneath My Wings”. Mary Keast read a poem. The first and second scripture readings were read by Michelle Kines. All those who had shared in Betty’s life were asked to consider themselves Honourary Casket Bearers. Casket Bearers were; Wayne Buick, Bill Davidson, Terry Hawryluk, Gordy Keast, Kelly Keast and Dana Schattenkirk.
Following the Interment Service at Roblin District Cemetery a reception was hosted by the United Church Lunch Committee at the fellowship hall at the church.
