In Loving Memory of

Clara Mohr

1928 – 2016

Clara Mohr passed away peacefully at the Roblin District Health Centre on Saturday, September 3, 2016. Clara was born on November 11, 1928 to Clara Wilhelmine (nee Rosenow) Zimmer and Eduard Zimmer.

Sadly, Clara began her life without her mother, since her dear mother died giving birth to her and her identical twin sister. Her father chose to name the children after their mother. The infants were baptized on November 13, 1928, at the Bethania Evangelical Lutheran Church, at Friedfeld, Manitoba as Clara Zimmer and Wilhelmina Zimmer.

Two babies must have been considered too much for one person to care for, so their aunts took in the infant girls.  Mom was taken in by Emilie Zimmer (Gustav) Liske, her dad’s sister. They were raised in different homes, apart from one another. Despite this separation it was difficult to tell them apart even years later.   Being identical twins, they had much the same mannerisms.

Clara reaffirmed her Baptismal faith with her Confirmation vows at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shevlin, Manitoba on May 9, 1943.  In those days Confirmation meant reciting much of Luther’s Catechism, The Articles, The Creeds, The Ten Commandments and their meanings, numerous Bible Verses and Hymns in front of the congregation on Confirmation day.  If this wasn’t tough enough, it was all done in the German language. Mom studied hard to avoid the embarrassment of faltering in front of everyone, and she was terrified until it was all over.

Mom’s childhood was lived during The Great Depression of the 1930’s and was anything but easy. Economic circumstances did not permit her to go beyond the eighth grade. Still, she had a very strong constitution and there was seemingly nothing that she couldn’t do if she put her mind to it. If there was anything we learned from Mom, it was to be thankful for what we have and never to be wasteful. She could have written the book on the three R’s without an extensive study. Recycling and re-using was just a part of normal everyday living.

Clara met her lifelong love; Alexander Mohr and they were married in 1946 in St. John’s Lutheran Church at Shevlin. Throughout their married years they were a resourceful couple with very strong work and life ethics. They were to be married for 45 years until dad’s untimely passing in 1992.

Mom was very artistic and largely self-taught. She loved cooking and gardening and collecting recipes. She taught herself to sew, crochet, do needlepoint and petitpoint. She was an excellent cook and had two freezers, packed with food. If visitors came to the door they were invited in for tea or coffee and suddenly a table full of food and goodies would magically appear.

Mom loved the fellowship of her church family, the choir and the weekly quilting sessions. If for some reason she had to miss church, she would lament, “it just doesn’t feel like Sunday when I miss church.”  Thank you to those who drove her there in the Handi-Van and made this possible until recently.

Clara’s life will be celebrated by her loving daughter Leona (Siegfried) Hackbart, her grandson; David (Kim) Hackbart, great grandchildren; Alexander, Anna and Logan Hackbart, her granddaughter; Andrea (John) Vandewater, great grandchildren Jasmine, Katrina and Richard Vandewater, her loving son Douglas (Freda) Mohr; her grandson; Tim (Tracy) Mohr, great grand children Cody, Cole, Sera Mohr, her grandson; James (Leann) Mohr, great grandchildren Dillon and Brooke and her grandson Philip Mohr.

Clara will also be missed by her brothers; Bert Zimmer and Julius (Ruth) Zimmer, her brothers-in-law; George Wagner and Jack (Agnes) Mohr, her sisters-in-law; Marie Mohr and Alfreda (Keith) Fulford, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members whose lives she touched.

Clara was predeceased by her parents; Eduard and Clara (nee Rosnow) Zimmer, brother Lawrence (Gladys) Zimmer, sister Wilma Wagner, sister-in-law Marguerite Zimmer, sister Alvina (Hewitt) Quick, and brother Robert (Elizabeth) Zimmer.

A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 7:30 PM in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin with Pastor Arron Gust officiating.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 2:00 PM at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Roblin also with Pastor Arron Guest officiating.  The organist, Debbie Funk led the congregational hymns; “Amazing Grace”, “Just As I Am”, and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.  St. Matthew’s Lutheran Quartet performed “How Great Thou Art”.  The family has requested that all those whose lives were touched by Clara should consider themselves Honorary Casket Bearers.

The Casket Bearers; Douglas Mohr, Sig Hackbart, David Hackbart, Tim Mohr, James Mohr and Philip Mohr carried Clara to her final resting place next to her beloved husband Alex at Shevlin District Cemetery.

Following the Interment Service in Shevlin District Cemetery, a memorial reception was held in the lower auditorium of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, hosted by the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Ladies.

We would especially like to thank Dr. Aziz and the nurses and caregivers at Roblin Health Center, as well as the caregivers at Crocus Court Personal Care Home. All of you helped to make our Mother’s life much brighter and more comfortable during the past two years.

Even the smallest care and concern and help of anyone who touched Mom’s life, especially during these past two years, is greatly appreciated by her family. God Bless you all for your help and kindness.
