November 3, 1920 ~ September 18, 2014 (age 93) 93 Years Old
In Loving Memory of
Caroline S. Hunter
1920 - 2014
Caroline Sylvia Hunter age 93 years of Roblin, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Crocus Court Personal Care Home on Thursday, September 18, 2014.
Caroline was born November 3, 1920 at the farm in the Assiniboine Valley, south of Togo, Saskatchewan. Caroline was the fifth of nine children born to Carl and Selma (nee Gilsrud) Kolstad and was their first child born in Canada after the family emigrated from Minnesota, USA.
Caroline is survived by her sister Del Ulrich of Roblin, and brother Ed Kolstad of Surrey, B.C; her three sons Richard (Linda) Hunter of La Salle, Manitoba, Greg (Pattie) Hunter, and John (Joanne) Hunter, all of Roblin; her four grandchildren, Kevin (Anna), Randy (Kyla), Connor and Morgan; her four great-grandchildren, Cora, Leah, Calais and Kacela and numerous nieces and nephews.
Caroline was predeceased by her parents Carl and Selma (nee Gilsrud) Kolstad, her husband John (Bus) Hunter, siblings; Ernie Kolstad, Len Kolstad, Ada Dugan, Cliff Kolstad, Ken Kolstad, and Ruby Roe, brother-in-laws: Andy Ulrich and Joe Dugan, sisters-in-law: Delilah Kolstad, Edith Kolstad and Ann Kolstad.
Caroline spent her childhood in Saskatchewan’s Gartmore District and attended Gartmore School. Upon leaving school, she began work as a nanny for her sister Ada at the Dugan farm in the Castleavery District in Manitoba. While working at Dugan’s she met her future husband Bus Hunter, who lived at the adjacent farm, and they were married on May 17, 1944. They began farming and raising a family in Castleavery, where they were very active members of the community. They took part in curling, local dances, sports days, whist drives, Christmas concerts, large family gatherings for special occasions, and in later years they took up snowmobiling. She was a sensational cook and made everyone welcome at her table. After Bus died tragically in a farming accident in 1974, she moved back to live on their original home quarter. She had a large garden, and mowed acres of grass; she became a member of the Dropmore Chicks variety group and continued hosting great family meals and get-togethers. She grew tired of the isolation of farm life and moved to Roblin in 1988. She subsequently moved to Crocus Court Personal Care Home in 2006, where she resided until her passing.
Thank you to the staff at the Care Home for their kind and compassionate care of our Mother.
An Internment Service was at the Castleavery Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014. Caroline’s Grandchildren; Kevin, Randy, Connor and Morgan acted as Casket Bearers and all attendees at the graveside were considered to be Honorary Casket Bearers.
Caroline’s Memorial Service was held at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 6, 2014, at Roblin Knox United Church with Reverand Mark Hammond officiating. The organist, Mrs. Betty Wenner, led the congregation and Knox United Church Choir in singing the hymns “Abide With Me”, “Church In The Wildwood”, and “ Nearer My God To Thee”. The Choir Anthem was “In The Garden”. (Caroline had placed a handwritten list of these hymns in her bible to be sung at her funeral)
Following the service, a light lunch was prepared and served by the United Church Ladies.
