Arthur “Art” Carlot Lovas passed away at the Roblin District Health Centre on Saturday, December 3, 2016.
Art was born on June 17, 1924 to Carlot and Laura (Lorentse Johnson) Lovas at home on the farm north of Bield, Manitoba in the RM of Hillsburg, Manitoba. He was the third born of nine children. All of Arthur’s ancestors came from Norway.
He attended School in Bield and worked on the family farm until he joined the Canadian Army during WWII. First, he was sent to Red Deer, Alberta for training, then to England and eventually over to France and Belgium. He received a leg wound and returned to hospital in England for six months. Following this, he returned to Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg. Manitoba and was discharged in September of 1945.
Art married Jessie MacLeod on July 25, 1947. Following their marriage, they farmed together on SE 10-26-27 in the RM of Hillsburg.
Art worked at many jobs over the years to pay for the farm and improvements. He did some logging, drove school bus, sold crop insurance, took courses in plumbing and electric and wired many buildings for electricity.
Art also volunteered his services to the community in many ways. To mention a few; he served on the Bield elevator board of directors for 35 years, was a Bield school trustee for 15 years, volunteered with Bield 4H club 5 years, the Bield community centre 9 years, and the Bield veterans association 11 years. He was a Roblin Agricultural Society Life member, a member of the Roblin Legion for 35 years, the Roblin 50 and over club, and the exercise group there. He also volunteered at Crocus Court Personal Care Home, and delivered meals on wheels.
In 1987, Art and Jessie sold the farm and retired to Roblin. They traveled Europe and across North America during their retirement. They were to Scotland for one month, visited several countries in Europe, took a river cruise down the Danube, went to Disneyworld, and toured many states in USA. They also traveled across Canada and to the Yukon.
Art was predeceased by his parents; Carlot and Laura (Lorentse Johnson) Lovas and all his siblings; Emily (Fabian) Dube, Bernice Lovas, Verna (Philip) Ostrowski, Irene (Gordon) McArthur, Lillian (Dan) Klimchuk, Helen (John) Chescu, Myrtle Poyser, and Arnold Lovas.
Art was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Jessie of Roblin, his four children; Sharon (Peter) Matsyk of Russell, Manitoba, John (Anna) Lovas of Kenora, Ontario, Herbert (Diane) Lovas of Russell, and Robert (Pam) Lovas of Red Deer, Alberta. Art will also be sadly missed by his nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, his sister-in-law Linda Lovas his brother-in-law Lawrence Poyser, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
A Visitation Service for Art’s family was held on the morning of Saturday, December 10. Following the service, Art was carried to his final resting place in Bield District Cemetery by the Casket Bearers (grandchildren and great grandchildren); Bob Matsyk, Jerry Lovas, Jamie Lovas, Eric Lovas, Zachary Matsyk and Jordan Lovas.
Art’s Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 10 at 2:00 PM at Roblin Knox United Church with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating. The organist, Allison Shearer-Craig and the Knox United Church Choir led the congregational hymns “Bringing in the Sheaves” and “Beyond the Sunset”. Bob and Betty Dayson performed the duet “Go Rest High on that Mountain”. Bob Dayson performed the solo “My Way”. Jennifer How and Heather Fisher provided Scripture readings. The poem “I’m Free” was read by Frances Hutton and the poem “God Made a Farmer was read by Julie Shiner.
Following the service, a memorial reception was held in the Auditorium of Knox United Church, hosted by the Knox United Church Lunch Committee.
