In Loving Memory of
Annie Styba
1911 - 2013
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Mom, Baba, Great-Baba and Great-Great-Baba, Annie (nee Tkachuk) Styba on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Crocus Court Personal Care Home in Roblin, Manitoba.
Annie Tkachuk was born August 28, 1911 to Anton and Mary (Bitski) Tkachuk and lived in Merridale, Manitoba. She was fifth in the family of eight girls and one boy. Her sisters were Polly, Tillie, Katie, Pauline, Olga, Sophie and Victoria and her Brother was Mike.
Annie attended Timber school for a short time, as her father passed away very young and she helped to take care of her younger siblings. After Annie left the family farm, she went to Roblin and did housekeeping for many families.
Annie met and then married Steve S. Styba. Together, they farmed and raised their family of eight children; six boys and two girls in the Zelena District. Steve and Annie worked hard on their mixed farm; Annie always worked very hard on several vegetable gardens and picked blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, saskatoons and various kinds of mushrooms which she preserved for the long winters.
Later when they had electricity on the farm, Annie bought the largest freezer and it was always stocked with vegetables, fruit, cooking and baking. Annie was very active in the St. Michaels’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and community activities. After Steve’s death in 1972, Annie sold the farm and moved to Roblin where she purchased a house. She enjoyed spending many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens and was honoured with an award for her efforts.
Annie joined the Holy Redeemer Ukrainian Catholic Church in Roblin. Over the years, she dedicated many hours in food preparation for St. Vladimir’s College, as well as food preparation for weddings and other functions held in the Holy Redeemer Parish Hall. She enjoyed living in Roblin very much and made many friends. She joined the 50 and Over Club where she played cards, bingo and socialized. Annie loved her church family and had many of her friends over for lunch where they would play cards and visit. Annie supported the parish bingo, where she helped out and began to play in her later years.
Annie enjoyed travelling, visiting her children in Toronto, Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Winnipeg and Snow Lake. She took vacations with her sisters to Los Angeles, Mexico and attended the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena California, with her daughter Linda.
Mom was the head and heart of our family. She was the one we looked to for guidance and advice. She taught us many things, and supported each one of us in our life endeavours. Her support will be greatly missed and will be remembered with great fondness as we all continue to reflect on all the experiences we shared with her. She was very proud of each one of us. Those that married into our family were treated like one of her own, given all her love and respect.
In November of 2010, Annie was admitted to the Roblin District Hospital and then on January 4, 2011 she became part of the community at Roblin Crocus Court Personal Care Home.
Annie received exceptional care from the staff at the Roblin Hospital and Roblin Crocus Court Care Home.
Annie is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Walter (Victoria) Styba of Roblin, Tony (Anne) Styba of Pender Island, B.C, Olga Cybuchowski of Toronto, Ontario, David (Mary) Styba of Barrie, Ontario, Russell (Rae) Styba of Cowichan, B.C, Al (Janet) Styba of Snow Lake, Manitoba, Frank (Linda) Styba, of Burnaby, B.C, Linda (Neil) Collings of Burnaby, B.C, and twenty-six grandchildren, thirty great- grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended families.
Annie was predeceased by her husband Steve Styba in 1972, her parents Anton and Mary Tkachuk, grandsons Tom, Terry, and Steven Styba and son in law Alec Cybuchowski as well as all her sisters and brother.
Panachyda (prayers) were held on Sunday, March 10, 2013, 7:00 PM at the Chapel of Nairn–Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin, with Reverend Father Oleg Bodnarski officiating.
Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated Monday, March 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM from the Holy Redeemer Ukrainian Catholic Church in Roblin, with Reverend Father Oleg Bodnarski officiating, assisted by the cantor Victor Sorochuk, sacristan Peter Kowalyk and the Cross Bearer Neil Collings. The Eulogy was delivered by Annie’s granddaughters Tracy Angel, Sheri Tait and grandson Larry Styba. Casket Bearers were Tracy Angel, Sheri Tait, Larry Styba, Matthew Styba, Steven Styba and Craig Andres.
Following the Interment Prayers at Roblin Catholic Cemetery, a Memorial Dinner was served by the U.C.W.L. in the lower hall of the Holy Redeemer Church.
We little knew that morning
God was to call your name
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
