Anatole (Anton) Shafransky of Roblin, Manitoba passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014 at the age of 87. He died peacefully at the Roblin District Health Centre.
Anton was born in Horokhiv, Volyn, Ukraine on June 8, 1927. His family immigrated to Canada in 1938 and settled in the community of Merridale, Manitoba.
In 1972 he moved to Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, with his wife and three sons and then retired to Roblin in 1993.
No matter where Anton lived he was known for his generosity and love of entertaining. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage and maintained contact with relatives in the Ukraine.
Anton leaves behind his wife Helen Shafransky of 58 years and his two children Dan (Lois) and Bill (Chela), his five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Raisa (Gerry) Davies, many nieces and nephews as well as cousins in the Ukraine. He was very proud of his entire family.
Anton was predeceased by; his son Eugene, his brother Harry, his sister Helen, his parents Wasyl & Katherine and his Uncle Fred.
Prayer Vigil Service was held on Thursday, July 10, 2014, 7:00 PM from the Chapel of Nairn–Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin.
Funeral Service was held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM from St. John The Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Roblin, with Rev. Fr. Brent Kuzyk officiating, assisted by St. John The Baptist Orthodox Choir. Lorne Jasper and Rick Ducharme delivered the Eulogy. Cross Bearer was Terry Cherneski. Banner Bearers were Sam Shulhan and Rick Ducharme. Casket Bearers were Laura Brar, Chris Davies, Scott Davies, Gerald Jasper, Lorne Jasper, Dana Shafransky, Eric Shafransky and Stephen Shafransky. Sacristan was Russell Shafransky. All those who had shared in Anton’s life were asked to consider themselves Honourary Bearers.
Following the Funeral Service a Memorial Reception was held at the Roblin '50 & Over Club. The Interment followed at Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cemetery at Merridale, Manitoba.
A special thank you to the staff at the Roblin District Health Centre for treating Anton with such kindness. Also thanks to all the wonderful friends & family who visited Anton during these past months.
