In Loving Memory of
Alex Kurchak
1928 – 2016
It is with deep sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Alex on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, almost a month short of his 90th birthday.
Alex was born on January 18, 1927 at home in the Shell Valley District of Manitoba. He was a son of Peter and Katie (nee Pitz) Kurchak.
Alex was raised on the farm in Shell Valley. Alex excelled at sports and continued to be athletic all his life. As a young adult, he began farming, something he dabbled in all his life.
He later moved to Calgary, Alberta to be with his sister Vicky. While in Calgary, he re-connected with family friends, the Screpnek’s. During this reunion, he noticed Mike and Mary Screpnek’s daughter and before long cupid worked his magic.
Alex moved from Calgary to Edmonton to pursue a career in plumbing. He married Doris who pre-deceased him in 2003. Their three children were born in Edmonton.
In 1966, Alex, Doris and their children relocated to Roblin, where Alex resided until his death. Alex moved to Roblin to work with his brother Steve at Roblin Truck Service. He then re-started the theatre in Roblin that was built by a good friend, Joe Hersak. Then with Doris at his side, he began Roblin Allied Hardware. Long past retirement, Alex ended his working career at Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home, where he was a valued staff member for many years.
Alex was very involved in the community as a member in the Lion’s Club, the President of St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Roblin Congregation and a member of the order of St. Andrews.
Alex was pre-deceased by his parents Peter and Katie (nee Pitz) Kerchak, his in-laws Mike and Mary Screpnek, his sister Vicky Borden, his sister-in-law Pauline Kurchark and his beloved wife Doris Kurchak.
Alex will be remembered as a man who loved his family deeply. Left to continue his legacy are his children; Darlene (Ken) Bobrosky of Calgary, Darrell (Colleen) Kerchak of Winnipeg and Darren (Alison) Kerchak of Portage la Prairie and his grandchildren; Jordan, Reegan, Aynsleigh and Brianne. Alex will also be missed by his brother Steve Kurchak of Roblin, his brother-in-law George (Betty) Skrepnek of Sherwood Park, Alberta, his nieces Sherry (Scott), Leona (Guy), Sindy (David) and Lydia (Stan), his nephew Wade and his companion of many years Pauline Werbowetsky.
A Prayer Vigil Service was held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin with Father Brent Kuzyk officiating.
Alex’s Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, December 7 at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Roblin with Father Brent Kuzyk officiating. Bernie Kozmeniuk served as Cross Bearer and Guy Lauzon and Donald Werbowetsky were Banner Bearers. The family requested that all those whose lives have been touched by Alex to consider themselves Honorary Casket Bearers.
Following the Funeral Service, Alex was carried to his final resting place in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Cemtery by the Casket Bearers; Stan Steciuk, Lawrie Lungal, Jason Steciuk, Jordan Kerchak, Robert Frost-Hunt and Lee Gaber.
Following the Interment Service a memorial reception was held at the Roblin 50 and Over Club, catered by Nelson and Jill Daneluk.
